 {open}Blocking out the pain

Liam ran into the nature reserve. And ran. He wanted to run away from everything. Anything to stop the pain. He had tried to protect his sister, Maddie. Tried to give her a better life. Maybe he had. Since she was being taken care by his best friend, maybe she could have everything Liam couldn't give her. He still remembered the look on Maddie's face when the police were trying to break down the door. A look of horror, fear, and sadness. Sadness because she knew she would never see her brother again. The brother who had raised her, the brother that had protected her from the horror she was surely going to endure if she stayed at that house. Liam had shouted to go with Matt. He couldn't follow, after getting shot in the leg by the police. He carried that scar as a painful reminder of what he had lost.

Pain like needles ran through Liam's chest as he kept running. How could he feel so far in shadows in a place where sunlight was beating through the treetops. Liam swerved around a large pine and kept running, ignoring the burning of his body. After years of living on the streets, he had ignored messages of pain that his body sent him. After getting beaten up, battled addictions, and been shot in the leg, Liam's nerve endings were nearly fried.

Liam stopped by a large tree, trying to catch his breath. With a yell of frustration, he slammed his fist into the tree. "F*ck!" he screamed. Looking down at his hand, he could tell something wasn't right. His ring finger and pinky were bent in a disturbing way and his whole hand was covered in blood. But Liam didn't care. He just blocked out the pain, like he used to do when he was little. When his dad would beat him senseless for the smallest thing. He had gotten used to the broken ribs and the bloody lips and the black eyes. But that didn't stop the rivers of tears from flowing. "Where did I go wrong?' he mumbled to himself. He went wrong when he was born. When his mom didn't take him and his sister with her when she left. When he left himself.

He wished he had a gun. Just so he could shoot himself and get it over with. He was going to be in Juvie for another two years before he was going to prison for the rest of his natural life. There was no chance for parole. Nobody likes a cop-killer. Or a murderer. Murderer. It rang through Liam's head night and day. It was something Liam couldn't escape from. The court room was bad enough. The looks of sheer hatred from everyone in the room was enough for Liam to have serious suicide thoughts right there. If it wasn't for the cops being there, he would have. He wanted to die. There was nothing he had to live for.

Sydney walked silently into the nature preserve. She heard someone curse, loudly, and went to go see what had happened. She paused as soon as Liam was in sight. She saw his bloody hand and his tears and wondered if she would be intruding if she walked up to him. Deciding that she didn't care if she was intruding or not, she walked over.
"Hi."
She said, approaching him. She looked at his hand, then his face, then the tree that had some of his blood on it, then at his hand and back to his face.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
Syd grabbed his wrist and looked at his hand. She wiped some of the blood away with her fingers, gently so it wouldn't hurt as she neared the oddly-bent finger. Wordlessly, she continued to wipe the blood off his hand, waiting for him to speak or tell her to stop. But since he had yet to tell her to stop, she kept wiping the blood off, slowly, with her index and middle finger.

ooc: She has her middle and index fingers held together like this (click) as she is wiping the blood off his hand.
